Science at Bangor & in the News
Wow! I didn't realize how long I've neglected the blog. As you might imagine, life has been pretty busy for myself and all of the students. We survived another round of testing, took a test, and started in on a new unit. We are currently working on oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions, so keeping track of electrons is the name of the game. Redox reactions are extremely important in biology and are involved in creating electric current. Also in the mix currently is the Diet Coke & Mentos exploration. Yesterday the 2nd & 4th hour students gave a quick summary of their proposals & then each class voted on which proposal they wanted to test. 2nd hour will be looking at how the different flavors of Mentos affect the geyser & 4th hour will be examining how the number of Mentos affect the geyser. Due to the Spring Fling assembly, 6th hour will present & vote on Monday. We will be outside doing the experiment on Wednesday, rain or shine. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.
The seniors' last full week of classes will be this week, with their finals the week following. To help the seniors prepare for their final exam, I will be holding review sessions in the library during advisory all next week, except Wednesday, and on Monday & Tuesday the next week. There will be a special treat available on Tuesday, 5/19. The seniors will have one last test on Monday, 5/18. The test will probably be a little shorter than normal and will cover redox reactions (assigning oxidation numbers, determining which atom is oxidized and reduced, & writing & balancing half reactions). Seniors, you are almost there!
